Abel Makkonen Tesfaye or famously known as ‘The Weeknd’, is a Canadian music artist, singer, songwriter and record producer.
He was born on February 16, 1990, as the only child of Makkonen and Samra Tesfaye, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and was raised in Scarborough. His parents were Ethiopian immigrants in Canada during the 1980s.

It was not long when his parents split up, after that, he was raised by his mother and grandmother. Living with them taught him a lot of things including how to speak in Amharic and together attended services at Ethiopian Orthodox Church.

Abel’s career started in 2010 where he met producer Jeremy Rose, who thought of starting a dark R&B musical style project. The two of them collaborated in an album producing three songs, ‘Loft Music’, ‘What You Need’, and ‘The Morning’. In late 2010 Abel uploaded those three songs on YouTube under his own stage name.
