Washington’s parents, Lennis Washington and Denzel Washington, Sr., were divorced when Denzel was in the age 14. Lennis was a beauty salon owner, while Denzel, Sr. was a Pentecostal minister/municipal worker.

After the divorce happened, Lennis, Denzel’s mother, sent him to Oakland Military Academy located in New Windsor in New York. Denzel, before leaving the military school, Denzel and his closest friends, had gone down to a path where everything seems to be inadequate.

In an interview made with Parade Magazine, Denzel admitted that those friends of his, later on, went to serve at most 40 years in prison, collectively.

Later on, Denzel attended Fordham University which is also located in New York City, where he attended as a collegiate basketball player. By that time, Denzel decided to take a semester off to decide what he will do with his life.

Denzel decided to take his future in consideration and decided on what his major should be. During the semester off, he spent most of his summer working at a camp at YMCA.

Denzel had been performing so well in a camp talent show that he impressed the campers and his colleagues so much.

Due to his performance, one suggested that he should start being an actor. Because of that suggestion, he returned to Fordham that fall and started to begin studying drama and, graciously, Denzel graduated with a BA in drama and journalism in the year 1977.

Denzel Washington Career

The American Conservatory Theater located in San Francisco is one of the most prestigious theaters of that time, and amazingly, Denzel won a full-ride scholarship to that place. Although, Denzel returned to New York after a year just to pursue his acting professionally.

From time to time, Denzel appeared in several stage shows as a starter, but his first ever on-screen role came in when it was 1977 with the made-for-television movie, titled Wilma.

Because of Denzel’s performance and will, Denzel slowly became known and several smaller stage and screen roles had been offered.

By the year of 1982, Denzel got his big break when he landed a spot for the great medical drama St. Elsewhere. Denzel’s character Dr. Phillip Chandler had been so successful that the show lasted an entire six years.

Recently, in the year 2016, Denzel was presented with the Cecil B. Demille Lifetime Achievement Award at the Golden Globe Awards.

Although Denzel never really finished his graduate school, amazingly, he had received three honorary doctorate degrees.

In 2002, instead of being one of the actors, Washington decided to step behind the camera and started directing.

The movies he directed were Antwone Fisher, The Great Debaters (2007), and also Fences (2016). Starting from there, he also produced several movies which includes The Book of Eli and The Equalizer, and even several television programs.

Denzel Washington is not the kind of person who spends all of his money in one go. He’s the kind of person who kept his fame and large paychecks in an organized manner.

He had given his help to some of the organizations that are worthy to help with, both financial and personal. He has also been the spokesperson in 1993 for the Boys & Girls Club of America, and has served as one of the board in 1995.
